5. Summary of Research and Experience:

 

NCAR, Atmospheric Chemistry Division (Scientist I/II/III, 1994 to present):

Atmospheric chemistry and measurement of reactive organic nitrogen compounds, non-methane hydrocarbons and halogenated organics. Participation in research projects include measurements of halogenated tracers, alkyl nitrates and NMHC during the STRAT (Stratospheric Tracers of Atmospheric Transport) and POLARIS (Photochemistry of Ozone Loss in the Arctic Region in Summer) projects on board the NASA ER-2. Co-investigator in PEM-TROPICS A and B and SONEX in collaboration with the University of California at Irvine (UCI) for the analysis of alkyl nitrates and halogenated tracers in canister samples taken on board the NASA DC-8 and P3B aircraft. Measurements of NMHC, alkyl nitrates and halogenated tracers during the NARE II (North Atlantic Regional Experiment) and STERAO-A (Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange, Radiation, Aerosols and Ozone) projects.

Design, construction and deployment of instrumentation for the airborne measurement of PANs. Principal investigator for aircraft measurements of PAN and homologues on board the NOAA-P3B during SOS (Southern Oxidant Study, Summer 1999), on board the NCAR C-130 during TOPSE (Tropospheric Ozone Production about the Spring Equinox, Feb-May, 2000), on board the NCAR Electra during TEXAQS-2000 (Texas Air Quality Study, Summer 2000), on board the NASA P3-B during TRACE-P (Transport and Chemical Transformation Experiment – Pacific, Spring 2001), during ITCT (Intercontinental Transport and Chemical Transformation) project, on board the NOAA-P-3B. Developed, built and successfully flew a new fast CIMS-PANs instrument with 2 second time resolution on the NOAA P-3B aircraft during the summer 2004 ICARTT mission. Organized and lead international PAN intercomparison campaign in summer 2005. Mission scientist for NCAR/NSF C-130 aircraft during MIRAGE-Mex field mission conducted in Spring 2006.

Current position: Group Leader, Community Airborne Research Instrumentation (CARI) group, Atmospheric Chemistry Division, NCAR.

            Design and construction of an automated gas chromatograph for the measurement of light hydrocarbons on a mobile platform. Supervision of one graduate student and one undergraduate student. Preparation of a joint research project between Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Volkswagen AG for the on-road measurement of automobile emissions.

Helped organize the second MIRAGE workshop in Boston and led the air chemistry instrument discussion. Helped summarize and synthesize the results from the workshop. Responsible for dialog with RAF on aircraft campaign planning. Helped write the MIRAGE-Mex SOD for NSF. Helpes prepare the OFAP request document for MIRAGE-Mex. Prepared all flight plans for the C-130 for submission to the Mexican authorities. Prepared final payload for the C-130. Serving as the chair of the MIRAGE-Mex C-130 implementation committee.
